Mary Seacole born 1805 learned natural medicine in Jamaica and volunteered as a nurse in a cholera outbreak in Jamaica, taking her skills to Central America and then the Crimea War where she treated wounded soldiers from both sides. She wrote her autobiography Wonderful Adventures of Mrs Seacole in Many Lands 1857.
